AMAN CENTER PARTICIPATES IN THE 48TH REGULAR SESSION OF THE PERMANENT ARAB COMMITTEE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
The Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center (Aman), one of the centers of the Qatar Foundation for Social Work, has participated in the duties of the 48th regular session of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights, which started its duties at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, for over the course of three days of this month, headed by the State of Kuwait and with the participation of a number of human rights authorities in the State of Qatar; In addition to the concerned governmental bodies in the Member States, national human rights institutions and civil society organizations enjoying observer status.
Such participation comes within the framework of Aman Center's plans and programs and in order to activate the community, regional and international partnership between it and government bodies, civil society institutions, and the public and private sectors; And as a qualitative leap in international efforts to prevent violence against the center's target groups of women, children, and victims of family rupture.
Several topics were presented on the agenda of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights, the most important of which is the draft Arab Convention to Combat Violence against Women and Girls and Domestic Violence. Whereas, Ambassador Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Head of the League's Social Affairs Sector, stressed the importance of the draft of “Arab Convention to Combat Violence against Women and Girls and Domestic Violence", which was referred to the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights by the Arab Women's Committee.
In this context, Mrs. Sabeeka Al-Nasr, Acting Director of the Rehabilitation Department at Aman Center, expressed her participation in this session and the extent of the Arab Permanent Committee for Human Rights' keenness on the importance of joining efforts of member states in promoting and protecting human rights through continuous cooperation and coordination among human rights organizations.
Mrs. Sabeeka Al-Nasr also clarified the most important recommendations issued by the 40th session of the Arab Women's Committee for this year to refer the draft of “Arab Convention to Combat Violence against Women and Girls and Domestic Violence" to the Permanent Committee for Human Rights, which, after studying the project, made several recommendations, including the following:
- Amending the project's title to become “The Arab Declaration Project to Combat All Forms of Violence against Women and Girls"
- Assigning the General Secretariat the Department of Legal Affairs, the Department of Human Rights, and the Department of Women, Family and Childhood to draft the first draft of the project, and referring it to an open-ended working group emanating from the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights, which is headed by the State of Kuwait to examine the project and express an opinion.
- Circulating the final draft of the draft of “Arab Declaration to Combat All Forms of Violence against Women and Girls" in preparation for submission to the 49th session of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights.
- Requesting the General Secretariat to present the draft declaration in its final form to the League of Arab States' Council in a future session.
It is worth noting that the duties of this session coincides with the passing of 53 years since the establishment of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights in September 1966. Whereas, it has contributed, over more than five decades, to building and strengthening the pillars of the Arab human rights system, building bridges of communication with partner regional and international governmental organizations, and with national institutions and Arab civil society organizations working in the field of human rights.
It should be noted that the Permanent Arab Human Rights Committee - the Main Committee - is one of the four mechanisms of the Arab human rights system that exists under the umbrella of the League of Arab States; In addition to the Arab Charter for Human Rights Committee, the Human Rights Committee of the Arab Parliament and the annual conference of those responsible for human rights in the Arab Ministries of Interior.
